Of Course

Of Course, 2011
Oil on Canvas
24" x 48"

A combination of 2 previous paintings: Adam and Even and the Astronomer. This is an unfinished version of the painting. I came upon this title as it serves a couple of purposes. First is the impression that these figures are going to a specific place and are "on course" to it (hence the telescope). Aside from that, I feel that this image (and the others like it) are the natural progression of the large Adam and Eve painting that I had made years ago. I had one of those "a-ha, of course" moments when I came up with this configuration. When I started this picture, I struggles with the palette selection and finally liked the idea that the color of the figures has been stripped out in the same way that color vanishes when the lights go out.

Although this version is more fleshed out, I still hope to do a much larger version in the near future.

The Astronomer

The Astronomer, 2011
Oil on canvas
28" x 32"
A return to painting after a long haitus. It was the prints of the same theme of a figure(s) adrift in a small boat with just a telescope that allowed me to quickly evolve this idea to what I've done here. I've been quite interested in astronomy lately and have been fascinated by recent celestial discoveries. I do think we've entered into a golden age on that front.

Untitled (figures adrift)

Untitled, 2011
Linoleum cut on paper, artist proof
6 3/4" x 11 1/4"

Untitled, 2011
Linoleum cut on paper, from 1 plate, artist proof
6 3/4" x 11 1/4"
These prints (among others) were made from 1 plate. Since the plate was altered so a second color could be added, there can be no reprint of the image. Since no formal edition was made, only the artist proofs' exist. I enjoy working this way as I feel it brings the printmaking process closer to drawing. No titles presented themselves for this series as the right ones, so for now they have none.

While laughing at the thought of taking all my stuff and sending it out to drift at sea I thought that it would make a good image. I took a number of shapes that I have been working with and sent them on their way.

Large Figure

Large Figure, 2011
Pastel on paper
26" x 40"

Originally drawn as a standing figure, at the last moment, I felt that she was just asking to lay down and rest, and so I obliged.

I've developed an addiction to reconstructing the figure. With it, I see limitless possibilities.

Back to Basics

Seated Woman
Pastel on paper
24" x 36"

With my responsibilities as a father and as the head of an art center, it's been challenging to find the time to get back to my own work. When I do, I've always found it refreshing to go back to what I love and that's my foundation as a draftsman. This figure comes from looking at deKooning's seated women (which admittedly would be a stretch for anyone to see).
